Detour to Sunflower Wonderland

Field Trip: 5/28/2016 and 5/31/2016
Routes: US 281 north from San Anotonio to Hico, Texas 220 to US 67, US 67 to RR-1382,  I-35 from Dallas to San Antonio

Alwas has to be one who does not conform.

My trip to Dallas was much more fun being there than getting there or coming back from there. On the trip up I went via US 281 and then Texas 220 to US 67.  The best I saw along this route was actually along US 281 from San Antonio to Blanco and some spots here and there after that.  I was really surprised at the large numbers of long stretches of purple horsemint. This is definitely it's best year in my experience.  Aside from roadside blooms, I did not see much else out in the fields.  I stopped along Texas 220 to check on a location where I have seen blue bell (Gentian) plants in the past. Well that location is now a staging site for road repair material, so I doubt there will be any blue bell plants there this year (but you never know).  I drove down a side road near there and found some day flowers, basketflowers and what I think is species of Allium wild onion or wild garlic.

On the way back from Dallas I was going to take a route through Meridian and Hamilton into San Saba County, but the "way was shut" once again by storms. So I took the boring route home via I-35 which turned out taking me right by one of the largest sunflower fields I have seen in a long time. I spotted this very large field of sunflowers along the west service road of I-35 south just before FM-195 north of Georgetown, Texas.  The amazing thing about this sunflower field was not just its size, but that it was also mixed in long stretches with purple (pinkish) horsemint.  So I guess the "detour" worked out okay, but I ended up having to drive through some heavy rain after leaving the sunflower field.
