Took the Hill Country tour 03-24-17

Bluebonnets and Church

Took the Hill Country tour 03-24-17 around the Llano area and last weeks hopes for a good season has dwindled to, "Well, maybe next year". Flowers have increased in coverage since last week but there are some downsides. There are some good scenes as long as you stick to the main roads. I was there as the rains came through this morning and it amounted to nothing more than getting the road wet. No help today.

Routes:
Hwy 16 Fredericksburg to Llano to Babyhead Cemetery. Coverage is good along roadsides with BB and IP but not as good as last year.
Willow City Loop is either too early or will be very poor this year.
Hwy 29 west and east of Llano. Good roadside coverage with long stretches of BB and IP. Large field of IP west of Llano.
Hwy 71 northwest and southeast of Llano good coverage (better than 29 on 71 southeast of Llano) with long stretches of BB and IP.
FM 1900 - some roadside coverage but no fields
2618 - some BB but may be too early
Pontotoc ruins - BB very nice
962 - very little

Overall, blooms are smaller than average and at or near peak (some past peak and going to seed). Coverage is good in many areas but the area is not as lush as last year with flowers or grass.
Everything appears to be starved for moisture and looked dry. Again, there are a few exceptions of healthy BB but still small.
Maybe the rains expected this week will be some help.
Mason County next weekend.
