Hill Country: Mason County

Report Date: 4/26/2019

US 87 West of Mason 4/26/2019

Summary: A Coat of Multi-color wildflowers has come to parts of Mason County.  There are still some bluebonnets looking good enough to photograph with even a few new buds. Some locations are well past peak, but the fields along RR 783 south of Hilda look good enough for a photo at wide angles. I saw a wide variety of wildflowers including wine cups, mealy blue sage, bitterweed, greenthread, firewheels, Texas vervain, pincushions and sensitive briar, blue sage and others.

US 87 from about 6 miles west of Fredericksburg for about 20 miles is literally covered with a variety of wildflowers. There are fields of yellow greenthread (Thelesperma sp.), and roadsides covered red with firewheels/Indian blanket (Gaillardia pulchella). There are watercolor fields with blue streaks from Texas vervain (Verbena halei), white streaks from lacy daisies (Aphanostephus sp.), and yellow streaks from greenthread.

RR 783 south from US 87 to well past Hilda has fields and roadsides with fairly solid coverage of yellow greenthread and some roadside bluebonnets. At least two of the bluebonnet fields south of Hilda still look good enough for photos, but are at peak. I even saw some still with pointy tops. I doubt these will last much longer, but should be good through this weekend (4/27-4/28/2019). (photos later)

I also checked Texas 41 going west for I-10 and RR 1340 south and east from Texas 41, but saw very little to stop and photograph compared to US 87 and RR 783.
